Voice over Internet Protocol Bridging
Public safety agencies are investing millions in devices that allow agencies to patch non-interoperable LMR (land mobile radio) systems together. Many of these bridging systems use VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) technology. While IP (Internet Protocol) itself is a formal standard that allows for interoperability, the VoIP technology built on top of that standard is often proprietary and prevents interoperability.
The PSCR (Public Safety Communications Research) program is leading a coalition of public safety officials and bridging systems vendors to ensure that disparate LMR systems can interoperate using today’s VoIP technologies. This coalition has developed a BSI (bridging systems interface) implementation profile, which is the minimum set of standards, parameters, and values required to achieve interoperable implementations.More about VoIP.
