FEB 16 – 18, 2011 (Boulder, CO) — In partnership with DHS/OIC, the PSCR program hosted its third workshop for VQiPS.

Through the VQiPS project, public safety practitioners, Federal partners, manufacturers, and representatives from academia and standards making bodies are working to improve the way in which video technologies serve the public safety community. The VQiPS workshop is a collaborative working session for these entities to coordinate efforts in establishing quality requirements for video use in public safety. (Proceedings Agenda)

With the help of Steve Surfaro, VQiPS launched an effort to create a standard based on the recommendations that will be included in the VQiPS guide. Teams for each section of the standard were delegated, and a rough timeline was established.

Researchers began developing a new strategy for the video quality tests performed by PSCR. This approach is based on acuity, which will serve as a one-dimensional metric of video quality that is relatively easy to measure in the field. This new direction should allow researchers to make the measurements necessary for the user guide in a much shorter amount of time.

PSCR researchers also received additional feedback from public safety practitioners about how video is used in the field. This information will help ensure that the VQiPS guide is well-suited to public safety applications.

John Contestabile was elected as the new chairman of the VQiPS Leadership Team replacing VQiPS founder, Dr. Carolyn Ford, who has moved on to a new R&D opportunity and will be greatly missed.
